At the turn of ...
By gracious powers (of Dietrich Bonhoeffer)
This touching song of the Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote in 1945 in a concentration camp shortly before his execution.
surrounded by good powers loyal and silent
protected and comforted wonderful -
will I live these days with you and with you
go into a new year;
afflict even the old our hearts,
presses still evil days bring us heavy burden
Oh Lord, give our frightened souls
the salvation for which you have created us.
And You give serious cup, the bitter,
of suffering, filled to the highest in the margin, we
take him without trembling, grateful
from your good and beloved hand.
But you want us once more joy
give to this world and its sunshine,
then we Woll'n of the past To commemorate
and then you heard all our lives.
Let warm and light the candle flames today,
that you brought into our darkness,
leader when it may get together again!
We know your light shines in the night.
If the deep silence now spreads around us, then we let those
full sound of the world that extends invisibly around us, hear all of your children
high praise. By gracious powers so wonderfully
recovered
confidently waiting come what may.
God is with us night and morning,
and certainly with each new day.
